The BODY OF CHRIST: 1 CORINTHIANS SERMON SERIES

SERIES ON 1 CORINTHIANS

Who is still growing? How do we work together? Corinth was the place to be! Unfortunately, there was no real agreement on the foundations of the faith. Some believed one thing, others another, so who was right? Who was wrong? Thankfully, Paul came to the rescue with his first letter to the Corinthians. This letter provided practical help for Christians who were still growing. And, it still does. Gifts are the way that the body of Christ works together. What is love? What is wealth? Do you have a New Year’s resolution to build up your body? Don’t forget the Holy Spirit as we drive into BODY BUILDING: 1 CORINTHIANS SERMON SERIES.

January 20 - 1 Corinthians 12:1-11
“In the Service”

All Christians receive the Holy Spirit at the moment of their baptism. Whatever is graced
and gifted to us is for one purpose only — for “the common good.” We are graced and gifted not for ourselves but for a life “in the service”. . .“in the service” of others, for the common good, with the body of Christ.

January 27 – 1 Corinthians 12:12-31
“Teammates in Building the Kingdom”

God desires the body of Christ to work together. If it is truly united, then when one part
suffers the whole body suffers; when one member is honored, the whole body rejoices.
The body, therefore, must live, love, and cry together. The body is one; its strength comes through unity.

February 3 – 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13
“The Knot: Tied”

There is one thing we all know that is necessary for a marriage, not only to hold it together, but for the people in that marriage to be happy together, and that one thing is love. No matter what else is in a marriage, a love-less marriage is a life-less marriage.

February 10 – 1 Corinthians 14:12b-20
“Building Up & Reaching Out”

The use of spiritual gifts must be paired with the use of the mind. Paul says that the use of their spiritual gifts must be useful to knowledge.Otherwise, no one knows what you are saying and the church is not being spiritual built up.

February 17 – 1 Corinthians 15 :( 1-11) 12-20
“Good News for Good Living”

Paul’s point is to highlight the power of grace at work by Christ’s resurrection. He is self-
admittedly the “least of the apostles” because of his record as a persecutor of the church. But having met Jesus, who has risen from the dead, he would go on to become the greatest evangelist, if not apostle. This is how the joy of Easter transforms lives.

February 24 – 1 Corinthians 15:21-26, 30-42
“Going All In”

The good news is that by continually flexing our spiritual willpower we can experience
redeeming acts of resurrection in our lives.

CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES

CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES
MONDAY, DECEMBER 24th at 7:00 pm & 11:00 pm

at First Lutheran Church
located at the corner of Orleans & College
301 S. College Street

Christmas Story, Sermon, Holy Communion, & Candlelight

On a dark winter evening we gather to proclaim the coming of the light. The prophet Isaiah announces that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. In the story of Christ's birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, "Glory to God in the highest." Amid our broken world we proclaim that the prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh -- in Christ's body and blood -- so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world.

Join us in music, song, beauty, and joy, and let the light of Christ transform you.

THE ST. LUCIA FESTIVAL 2018

St. Lucia Festival will be celebrated
on Sunday, December 16th at 9:00 am
during the church service. Join us as we celebrate our Swedish heritage.

According to Swedish tradition, a ship carrying a maiden "clothed in white and crowned with light" appeared on the shore in Värmland during a great famine. The maiden, widely believed to be Lucia, distributed food and clothing to the needy, thus endearing herself to the Swedish people. As First Lutheran Church was founded by Swedish immigrants, the First Lutheran community has found it appropriate to celebrate this Swedish tradition.
